Title

Campus drilling work generates noise, impacts traffic Sept. 18-19 - 09/17/2013

Body

A contractor hired by the Washington State Department of Enterprise Services will be drilling at two locations near the west Capitol Campus on Sept. 18 and 19 causing minor traffic impacts and creating noise that could be loud enough to be heard inside nearby buildings.

Golder Associates will begin drilling at 8 a.m. Sept. 18 on the sidewalk or nearby parking lane along the south side of Union Ave. near Capitol Way. Several parking stalls along Union Ave. will be blocked off during this work, which is scheduled to be finished by 6 p.m.

The drilling resumes at 8 a.m. Sept. 19 along Columbia Street near the intersection with 11th Ave. This work will block a short section of the northbound lane of Columbia Street.

A flagger will be on site to manage traffic, including vehicles turning right from 11th Ave. to Columbia Street. The nearby crosswalk and sidewalk will remain open during the work, which will also be completed by about 6 p.m. There is a possibility that the work will continue on the morning of Sept. 20.

The drilling work is related to the possible construction of a new state-owned office building that would replace the existing building at 1063 Capitol Way and the adjacent parking garage.

The geotech drilling will be done to collect soil core samples. The samples are used for determining the type of foundation that must be constructed under new buildings.
