Heritage Park restrooms re-open following repairs

OLYMPIA – Temporary repairs have been made to the permanent restrooms at Heritage Park on the state Capitol Campus and the restrooms have reopened.

The restrooms were temporarily closed following two days of vandalism on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21 and 22, during which the doors were broken.

Permanent repairs will be made once new doors arrive. Short-term closures may be required to complete installation.

A pilot project will resume to keep a portable restroom and hand washing station open at Heritage Park when the park is closed during nighttime hours to provide 24-hour public restroom access.

Enterprise Services announced the pilot project Jan. 20.

Under the pilot, the park’s regular bathrooms will stay open during park hours, with the portable restroom and cleaning station open during non-park hours.

Park hours during the winter (November 1 - March 31) are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Park hours during the summer (April 1 - October 31) are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Department of Enterprise Services is committed to the pilot of the portable restroom, pending people do not vandalize the restroom or create unsanitary conditions in it.

Enterprise Services does not have the funding to keep the regular park bathrooms open 24 hours a day.

The agency is collaborating with the city of Olympia and other stakeholders to seek a collaborative, workable solution to address concerns about access to open public restrooms during nighttime hours in the Olympia area.
