Rally by gun owners could draw 1,500 to capitol grounds on Feb. 8

OLYMPIA – Up to 1,500 people are expected to participate in a gun owners rally Feb. 8 on state capitol grounds.

Enterprise Services issued a permit for a "2nd Right Rally" on the west Capitol Campus. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. near Tivoli Fountain.

As part of the rally, some attendees will be carrying firearms in accordance with Washington's "Open Carry" law. There is no prohibition against carrying weapons on the capitol grounds.

Rally organizers have worked closely with the Department of Enterprise Services and the State Patrol to conduct their demonstration in a manner that will not be perceived as threatening.

Anyone who sees behavior that causes concern is advised to call 9-1-1 and the State Patrol will respond.

The event organizers will begin setting up at 8 a.m. and post-rally clean-up will continue until at least 3 p.m. Traffic and parking on the campus could be affected most of the day.

Because of the large crowd expected that day, Enterprise Services encourages visitors to use alternate transportation options, such as Intercity Transit's Dash shuttle, to access the capitol grounds and buildings.
