Olympia, Wash. — The Department of Enterprise Services is selling two Olympia properties.

The properties, which occupy a half-block in downtown Olympia, went on sale to a limited audience May 20. As of July 21, any interested buyer may make an offer.

"We sell the assets that government can do without, so that public dollars are spent wisely,” said DES Chief Operations Officer Jo Aiken. “They were once an exciting investment for the state, but these properties have outlived their usefulness. A sale is the responsible and cost-effective thing to do.”

The state bought these properties in 1982 due to their proximity to Capitol Campus. Intended to serve future government functions, the properties were never improved. With the current needs of state government, an increasingly hybrid work environment, and a focus on saving money and consolidating office space, they no longer serve the state’s interests.

DES’ Real Estate Services division helps state agencies site their operations in safe, healthy, cost-effective places to work. When they’re no longer needed, the division also puts state properties up for sale.

Public sale now open

Last year, the Legislature directed that DES sell the properties for no less than appraised value.

DES listed the properties for sale in mid-May.

State law gives preferred entities — state, local, federal, or Tribal governments — a 60-day period to express interest in the properties. After 60 days, any buyer can make an offer.

Prospective buyers can express interest in either property by following the instructions in the sales notice for each.
