Construction work to close one lane of Capitol Way on Aug. 8

The southbound lane of Capitol Way between Union and 11th avenues in Olympia and next to the new state office building construction site will be closed from about 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, 2016. Flaggers will be on site to help manage traffic.

The lane closure is needed so workers can backfill the space between the shoring and foundation walls of the new office building being built on the block bordered by Capitol Way, 11th Avenue, Union Avenue and Columbia Street.

A shoring wall is constructed to hold back earth and support surrounding loads until the underground levels of the building are constructed. The foundation wall supports the weight of the building. Gravel and dirt are used to backfill the space between the two walls, to replace the soil that was removed during construction and to help with drainage.

In addition to the one-day closure of Capitol Way, a section of 11th Avenue between Capitol Way and to Water Street SW is closed until Aug. 24 for construction of underground utilities and backfilling work on that side of the construction site.
