New exhibit space to open in Capitol Building on Oct. 3

Beginning on Monday, Oct. 3, room 112, on the first floor of the Capitol Building, which has been used exclusively as a lunch room for school group tours, will also become exhibition space.

The first exhibit to be featured in the space will be “Moving Forward, Looking Back: Washington’s First Women in Government,” featuring photos and profiles of the first women to be elected to public office in Washington.

The exhibit will be open to the public from Oct. 3 through Dec. 30, 2016. Exhibit hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some intermittent closures for government business.

This is a second go-around for this exhibit, which was first created and exhibited in 2010 by the Legacy Washington group, a collaborative venture between the Secretary of State, State Library and heritage organizations across the state.

The exhibit will remain in the space until July 2017, to provide educational content for school children visiting the Capitol, but it will not be open to the general public after Dec. 30, 2016. Current plans call for a new exhibit to go on display in the room in July 2017.

The Department of Enterprise Services Visitor Services Program manages provides tours of the Capitol Building, including civic education tours to about 25,000 elementary and middle school students each year. Visitor Services also issues permits for events and displays on the Capitol Campus.
