No heat, hot water in west campus buildings Jan. 8-9

The heat and hot water will be shut off in several west Capitol Campus buildings from 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8 until 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9 so the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) can repair a leak in the underground campus steam system.

The outage will affect the following buildings:

  • Legislative
  • O'Brien
  • Cherberg
  • Insurance
  • Pritchard
  • Newhouse

DES staff recently discovered a leak in the system in a stretch between the Cherberg and O'Brien buildings. The leak is caused by a failed gasket.

The steam system feeding these buildings must be shut off to allow the piping to cool before the repairs can be made.

The temperature inside the buildings should return to normal levels within a few hours following the repairs.

The campus powerhouse, the building with the tall smokestack next to Capitol Lake, burns natural gas to produce steam used to heat and provide hot water to most campus buildings.
