West Campus tree safety alert: Restricted pedestrian access near Norway maple trees on the Great Lawn of the Capitol Campus

OLYMPIA – The Department of Enterprise Services is restricting pedestrian access near two large Norway maple trees on West Capitol Campus. The trees are on the Great Lawn near the World War II memorial and the Sunken Garden.

The trees are experiencing health issues and are supported by cables and scaffolding. People are asked to avoid the areas around and below the trees, which are roped off and marked by A-frame sidewalk barricades. The restriction is expected to last until year’s end, at a minimum.

“This is a safety issue – especially with the winds we get this time of year,” said Bill Frare, Enterprise Services Assistant Director for Facility Professional Services.

Enterprise Services is working with an arborist to determine next steps. The arborist’s report is expected by year’s end.
