Built in 1971, the pedestrian bridge over Capitol Way links the historic West Campus with state government office buildings, parking, gardens, and parks on the East Campus.

Concrete and metal components of the bridge are damaged. On the bridge deck, leaky joints have admitted water. Wintertime de-icing solution has corroded the metal. Concrete has cracked and eroded away. If left unaddressed, these conditions could continue to deteriorate and create safety concerns.

DES is working with a project team to:

• Remove segments of the bridge
• Repair and replace corroded steel and rebar
• Reinstall the segments
• Apply a protective weather coating

Project impacts

Aug. 10 – Oct. 28: Project duration.

Aug. 10 – Oct. 14: Capitol Way, from 15th Avenue SW to Sid Snyder Avenue SW, one lane closed in each direction. Short term Capitol Way road closures may also occur.

Aug. 13 – Oct. 9: Pedestrian bridge closed.

7 p.m. Aug. 20 – 5 a.m. Aug. 21: Capitol Way closed to all traffic.

7 p.m. Oct. 2 – 5 a.m. Oct. 3: Capitol Way closed to all traffic.
