Reminder: Aug. 5 public meeting on new campus building

The Department of Enterprise Services will host a public meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015, to share information about the planned construction of a new state-owned office building at 1063 Capitol Way S.

The public meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Presentation room at the 1500 Jefferson St. building in Olympia. The meeting is being held is to share information about the project, including the current building schedule and likely near-term impacts resulting from demolition and construction.

Inslee creates subcabinet to boost business diversity

Gov. Jay Inslee today convened a new subcabinet focused on increasing access for small and minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses to contracting opportunities with Washington state government. Inslee has tapped the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) to lead the subcabinet in partnership with the Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises.

Plaza Garage repair project completion delayed by one week

The opening of stair tower 1 in the Plaza Garage – the underground parking garage on the east Capitol Campus – will be delayed by a week. Stair towers 1 and 8 have been undergoing repairs.

Stair tower 8, the one nearest to the Employment Security Building, reopened earlier this week for use on all levels.

Stair tower 1, which is a few yards to the east and closer to the Transportation Building, is expected to reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 15, rather than Sept. 8 as previously anticipated.

 Holiday tree arrives at capitol Nov. 30, lighting ceremony on Dec. 4

OLYMPIA – The state holiday tree, the evergreen that adorns the Capitol Building rotunda each year, will arrive on the Capitol Campus on Monday, Nov. 30, at about 9:30 a.m.

The annual public tree lighting ceremony, sponsored by the Association of Washington Business (AWB), is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. in the state Capitol Building rotunda.

Reminder: DES taking public comment on proposed unmanned aircraft systems rules through Dec. 28

As part of the agency’s responsibility to keep the state Capitol Campus safe for everyone, the Department of Enterprise Services is proposing rules that will mostly prohibit launching, landing, or operating unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)/drones on the 486-acre campus. DES is taking public comment on the proposed rules through Dec. 28.

Traffic alert: lane closure in 14th Avenue tunnel on Sept. 18

One of the two eastbound lanes of the 14th Avenue tunnel, which runs underneath the east Capitol Campus, will be closed from about 8:15 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 18.

Staff from the Department of Enterprise Services will be removing graffiti from the tunnel wall that day, which will require the closure of the eastbound lane closest to the wall. The eastbound lanes are the ones headed towards Interstate 5 from the Capitol Campus.

Traffic flaggers will be on site to help direct traffic through the work zone.

Deschutes Parkway mowing to impact traffic Jan. 20-21

A crew from the Washington State Department of Transportation will mow roadside vegetation along the west and south side of Deschutes Parkway from Lakeridge Drive to the I-5 overpass in Tumwater on Jan. 20-21.

The mowing, scheduled from about 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days, will improve site lines and drainage along the southern half of the road.

Both lanes of Deschutes Parkway will be open, but a flagger will be on site to help manage traffic near the mower.

Campus tree work scheduled for Oct. 19-21

A tree care company will be on the Capitol Campus Oct. 19-21 to prune hazardous limbs and do other related work.

On Oct. 19, Arbor Care Tree Service will prune two red oaks growing by the northwest corner of the Legislative Building and begin tree stump grinding at Marathon and Heritage parks and at the Old Capitol Building in downtown Olympia.

Olympia Fire Department to train on campus Sept. 23, 25 and 30

Firefighters from the Olympia Fire Department (OFD) will be training on top of and inside the Plaza Garage, the underground parking structure on the east Capitol Campus, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 23, 25 and 30.

The training will help familiarize firefighters with the locations of fire alarm panels, standpipe connections, stairwells and other structural elements of the parking garage. Being familiar with the garage helps firefighters develop tactics and strategies for dealing with emergencies there.
