Concrete pour at campus construction site to close 11th Avenue on June 24

Progress continues, on schedule, at the construction site for the new state office building being built on the block bordered by Capitol Way, 11th Avenue, Union Avenue and Columbia Street.

An example of that progress will be evident on Friday, June 24 when a section of 11th Avenue next to the construction site will be closed for a concrete pour that forms a portion of the third floor of the five-story building.

The June 24 concrete pour will require the closure of 11th Avenue from Capitol Way to Water Street SW, in front of the GA Building. The road will be closed from about 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day.

As with previous 11th Avenue closures, the June 24 concrete pour will require a temporary change to the route used by the Dash shuttle, the free bus that runs through downtown Olympia from the Capitol Campus to the Olympia Farmers Market. Go to the Intercity Transit webpage for more information.

The concrete work will also require the closure of the left-hand turn lane on northbound Capitol Way at the intersection with 11th Avenue. And the sidewalk crossing at 11th Avenue and Columbia Street, near the GA Building, will be closed.

Barricades will be placed at both ends of the road closure and flaggers will be on site to help manage traffic. The concrete work cannot be done in a heavy rain and will be rescheduled if necessary.

Additional 11th Avenue closures

Concrete is being poured at the construction site nearly every workday right now. Much of the time the concrete pumper truck is parked on the Union Avenue or Columbia Street side of the construction site. But pretty much any time that concrete is poured on the south side of the site, the concrete pumper truck must be parked on 11th Avenue, requiring a road closure.

Currently, there are two additional 11th Avenue closures scheduled this month, in addition to the one this Friday. The other 11th Avenue closures are on:

  • Monday, June 27, from about 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 30, from about 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On each of these dates, the concrete trucks will be staged on Columbia Street and 11th Avenue. Once the trucks have emptied their load, they will be routed around the GA Building and leave the construction area by travelling eastbound on Union Avenue.

This same stretch of road will be closed periodically throughout the year, including for two weeks or more in late August. Additional details about this closure will be coming soon.
