Creating Accessible Documents 101 is an introductory, interactive course that teaches you to create accessible digital documents in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF formats, including fillable forms. You'll learn foundational accessibility concepts and practical techniques for designing and remediating documents to meet WCAG and Section 508 standards. The course covers proper content structure, accessibility checker interpretation, common issue prevention, and PDF remediation for legacy files. Training includes guided practice, real-world examples, and optional expert support.

Performance Objectives: After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Accessible Word, Excel & PowerPoint Documents
    • Design accessible office documents and interpret accessibility checker reports.
    • Correct structural issues (headings, lists, reading order, styles).
    • Fix non-descriptive links, missing alt text, and contrast issues.
    • Remediate tables, charts, and slide layouts for screen reader compatibility.
    • Create accessible form fields with proper labels and instructions.
    • Save and export documents for accessible PDF conversion.
  • Accessible PDFs
    • Apply PDF accessibility standards (WCAG, Section 508).
    • Convert Office documents to accessible PDFs.
    • Use Adobe Acrobat's accessibility checker and tag editor.
    • Review and repair reading order, tag structure, and alternative text.
    • Apply bookmarks and validate accessibility with assistive technology.
  • Accessible Fillable PDF Forms
    • Build accessible form controls (text boxes, radio buttons, checkboxes, dropdowns).
    • Ensure keyboard accessibility and logical navigation.
    • Apply best practices for accessible forms.

Prerequisite: Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office tools and access to Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.
