Remediation Workshop: Fixing Inaccessible Fillable PDF Forms
This hands-on workshop teaches you how to fix real-world accessibility issues in fillable PDF forms. You’ll learn how to create, test, and remediate forms so they meet WCAG and Section 508 standards. The course focuses on designing and building digital forms that people of all abilities can complete and submit successfully. You’ll also learn practical form-design principles that improve usability, clarity, and compliance.
We recommend that you bring your own PDFs that need remediation. You’ll work on them with expert support during training activities. If you do not have PDFs to fix, practice documents will be available.
Performance Objectives: After completing this course, you should be able to:
- Identify accessibility challenges in digital forms.
- Create form fields with accurate labels, instructions, and tab order.
- Add form controls (text boxes, radio buttons, checkboxes, dropdowns) that work with screen readers.
- Apply accessible color contrast and visual cues.
- Test forms for keyboard accessibility and logical navigation.
- Understand best practices for accessible online (HTML) forms and PDF forms.
- Remediate a real-world document you bring to the workshop.
Prerequisite: We recommend taking Creating Accessible Documents 101 first, or having similar experience with the basics of making accessible source documents (like Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files) that will be turned into PDFs.
You should already be familiar with basic PDF remediation skills such as setting a logical reading order, identifying correct tag structure, and creating tags. This content is covered in Remediation Workshop: Fixing Inaccessible PDFs.
You will need access to Adobe Acrobat Pro DC for this course.
