The Washington State Legislature is bicameral, consisting of a Senate and House of Representatives. The Senate consists of 49 senators and the House consists of 98 representatives. Legislators convene annually in the State Capitol of Olympia for a 60-day session on even numbered years, and 109-day session on odd numbered years. Long sessions are reserved for the passing of the biennial budget. The first day of the legislative session is always the second Monday of January of each year. Each lawmaker represents about 140,000 citizens per each of the forty-nine legislative districts. Voters from each legislative district elect one state senator and two state representatives.
