This is the meeting place of the Washington State Senate when in session. Each of the forty-nine senators are elected to serve a four-year term of office. Terms are staggered with 50% of the members up for re-election every two years. The rostrum at the front of the chamber is where the Lieutenant Governor presides as President of the Senate and where senate support staff carry out administrative operations. The floor of the Senate drops two feet gradually, from back to front, to provide a theater style view of the rostrum. Status boards are positioned to the right and left of the rostrum to communicate the status of bills under discussion. Lawmakers in this chamber vote by roll call or voice vote.
Visitors can view Senate floor activity from the 4th floor viewing galleries.
