Remediation Workshop: Fixing Inaccessible PDFs

Course Code: 2541

This hands-on workshop teaches you how to fix accessibility issues in real PDF documents. You’ll learn how to test and remediate PDFs so they meet WCAG and Section 508 standards. We’ll cover how to structure content correctly, use tags, and apply best practices so your PDFs work well with assistive technologies and are usable for everyone. You’ll also learn which automated tools can help you stay compliant.

We recommend that you bring your own PDFs that need remediation. You’ll work on them with expert support during training activities. If you do not have PDFs to fix, practice documents will be available.

Performance Objectives: After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Use Adobe Acrobat Pro DC’s accessibility tools to inspect and repair PDFs.
  • Identify and correct missing or incorrect tagging structures.
  • Fix reading order, heading hierarchy, and simple table accessibility issues.
  • Review interactive components to ensure correct labeling and tab order.
  • Give meaningful images alternative text and ensure decorative objects are hidden to assistive technologies.
  • Validate documents using accessibility checkers and screen reader simulation.
  • Document accessibility fixes for compliance records.

Prerequisite: We recommend taking Creating Accessible Documents 101 first, or having similar experience with the basics of making accessible source documents (like Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files) that will be turned into PDFs.

You will need access to Adobe Acrobat Pro DC for this course.
