The new Greening Washington Report compares enterprise spending from 2020 to 2021 on the most common products the state purchases: janitorial supplies, computers, and office supplies.

Highlights from the report:

Janitorial supplies

  • Purchases of green janitorial products nearly doubled from 44% in 2020 to 80% in 2021.
  • The total spend on janitorial supplies dropped by nearly 50% from $10.8 million in 2020 to $5.7 million in 2021, primarily due to telework.

Computers

  • Green computer purchases increased by 78% in 2021.
  • Non-green computer purchases dropped from $9.1 million in 2020 to just $31,100 in 2021.

Office supplies

Agencies spent $1 million on non-green office supplies in 2021, a 38% increase from 2020 spend totaling $623,776. The categories most often purchased are paper, toner and writing supplies.

Going forward, we are focusing on increasing green office supply purchases through an awareness campaign and working with suppliers to make it easier for purchasers to find green office supplies.
