DES statement: Vandalism at Legislative Building

There was significant damage to the State Reception Room, which has historic significance as a symbol of our state’s democracy. The room contains many priceless, irreplaceable historical artifacts, some of which were damaged.
The Department of Enterprise Services (DES), which stewards the state Capitol Campus, is assessing the damage. DES temporarily closed the building this morning to ensure the safety of building occupants and the public.
The building is now open to the public but certain spaces will be closed off as we continue to assess and start repairing damage. Capitol Campus is on a state of heightened security until further notice.
DES Security alerted Washington State Patrol about a security incident. WSP apprehended the intruder and took him into custody.
DES Director Matt Jones said, “I appreciate the rapid response from DES staff and collaboration with our emergency response partners. We are reviewing security at the State Capitol Campus to ensure the safety of all who work and visit the campus.”
DES will provide more information about the damage and associated costs as we know more.
