OLYMPIA, Wash. — Gov. Bob Ferguson appointed Matt Jones as director of the Department of Enterprise Services (DES) on July 15.

In a news release announcing the appointment, Gov. Ferguson said, "Matt's extensive knowledge of the Department of Enterprise Services made him a clear choice to lead the agency. His 18 years of experience at DES will serve Washingtonians well."

Jones was appointed interim director of DES in January 2025.

"I am honored to have the trust and confidence of Gov. Ferguson and look forward to serving the people of Washington as the director of DES. As we continue to build the foundation of this agency to support the enterprise, we need to strengthen the business of government and ensure services are funneled to communities across the state," Jones said.

Jones started his career in public service with the Department of General Administration, which later became DES. He's been with DES since its creation in 2011, and over the years he's helped shape key divisions within the agency and establish programs and services that support Washington state.

Jones' priorities are clear: "Areas of critical focus are supporting small businesses, stewardship of the Capitol Campus, and being effective business partners to state agencies, enabling the state to provide efficient services to the people of Washington. We must listen to our communities, hear and understand their needs, and implement improvements. Now is the time to take action."

In 2018, Jones helped establish the Capitol Campus and Visitor Services (CSVS) Division, which included adding a 24/7 security operations center, and in 2022 he was appointed CSVS assistant director. His passion for campus and public safety is matched by a strong commitment to operational excellence and creating efficient government solutions.

In October 2024, Jones was appointed DES' interim chief operations officer. He led DES' diverse portfolio of programs and services, including the care and stewardship of the country's largest capitol campus, facilities management, real estate, printing and mailing, public works capital projects, risk management, and small agency support services.

Over the past six months, Jones' leadership has been instrumental in transforming the agency's strategic plan into action, driving sustainable process improvements, and aligning its work with the Gov. Ferguson's priorities for the state.
