May 14 event could bring more than 1,500 people to Capitol Campus

The Department of Enterprise Services has issued a permit for the Poor People’s Campaign rally and march on the Washington State Capitol Campus.

Organizers estimate that more than 1,500 people could attend the May 14 event, which includes a 2 p.m. rally on the north steps of the Legislative Building, and a 3:30 p.m. march to Sylvester Park.

The event will affect traffic and parking on the west Capitol Campus and Capitol Way South. Enterprise Services crews will temporarily close the North Parking Diagonal during the march. Olympia Police will temporarily close a portion of Capitol Way South while the group progresses to Sylvester Park.

In addition, organizers say plans are underway to hold smaller rallies, expected to draw between 100 and 500 people each week, for the five subsequent Mondays. Enterprise Services has issued permits for the events, which are set for May 21, May 28, June 4, June 11 and June 18 on the north steps of the Legislative Building.

A complete list of upcoming permitted campus events is available on the Enterprise Services website.
