Using “The Leadership Challenge” to Bring Out the Best in Others

Course Code: 2315

Built around James Kouzes’ book, “The Leadership Challenge,” this program teaches you how to coach others to exhibit five key leadership practices: modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart.

A crucial part of successful coaching is having a feedback instrument that captures actionable insights from a leader’s direct reports, manager, and other colleagues. As part of this course, you will learn how to use an assessment called the Leadership Practices Inventory® (LPI) 360. The LPI® 360 is one of the most respected leadership development tools available. It is used by thousands of people in Washington state and over three million people around the world. By coaching your people using the LPI® 360, you will help others build the skills they need to develop more trust, stronger employee engagement, and better results.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Effectively coach and guide any leader to enhance their leadership skills.
  • Use the powerful insights from the LPI® 360 to create individualized leadership development action plans for those you are coaching.
  • Apply various effective coaching techniques that leverage the LPI® and the concepts associated with The Leadership Challenge model.

Intended Audience: State agency training managers and supervisors who want to embrace the philosophy of “Leaders as Coach.” Internal and external coaches, human resources (HR), and organizational development professionals.
