Next Capitol Lake/Deschutes Estuary community input meeting on June 29
State seeks input on possible hybrid options – part freshwater or saltwater reflecting pool, part estuary
The Capitol Lake/Deschutes Estuary executive workgroup is currently seeking community ideas for possible hybrid options – part freshwater or saltwater reflecting pool, part estuary – that would make improvements to fish and wildlife habitat and ecosystem functions, while also maintaining a historic reflecting pool at the north end of the lake/estuary.
The public can provide their input on this topic at the next community meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, June 29, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Presentation Room at the 1500 Jefferson Street building in Olympia.
Input can also be provided by completing the online survey on the Capitol Lake webpage. The survey will be open until June 30.
Other Capitol Lake input can be emailed to the Department of Enterprise Services at DESCapitolLake@des.wa.gov.
Other agenda items
The executive workgroup, which is made up of local and tribal government representatives, is also seeking community input on a draft "Purpose and Need" statement, which helps provide context and criteria for developing a range of possible long-term alternatives, and eventually, through the use of an Environmental Impact Statement, the selection of a preferred alternative for the management of what is now known as Capitol Lake.
There will also be a discussion about the feedback provided by the executive workgroup and others related to the categorizing of scientific studies related to water quality and habitat of Capitol Lake.
The full meeting agenda is posted on the Capitol Lake webpage.
