Capitol Campus East Plaza gets a facelift

A portion of the East Capitol Campus that was closed while it received a makeover has reopened to pedestrians with new walkways and updated landscaping.

The project removed the former landscape and garden beds in front of the Department of Transportation and Employment Security buildings so crews could replace the failing waterproof membrane on the roof of the Plaza Garage. The new landscape showcases green lawns and decorative plants that thrive in shallow soil and will provide a variety year-round displays of textures and colors. Many species will also be a source of food and habitat for wildlife.

A dedication to the newly designed portion of the East Campus Plaza will take place in 2020.

This project is the second phase of a multi-phased plan developed in 2006 to implement a master plan approved by the State Capitol Committee in 1997. The Legislature funded this project in the current Capital Budget. DES contracted with Washington Patriot Construction of Gig Harbor for the work. Learn more.
