Divers to inspect Capitol Lake dam July 28-29

A contractor hired by Enterprise Services will be inspecting the Capitol Lake dam on Thursday, July 28 and Friday, July 29. Divers will inspect the lake side of the dam on Thursday and the Budd Inlet side on Friday.

The contractor will follow the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife New Zealand mudsnail decontamination procedures following the lakeside inspection. Capitol Lake is infested with New Zealand mudsnails, an invasive species. Mudsnails can outcompete native aquatic snails and insects disrupting the food chain. Mudsnails are very small – about the size of a grain of rice when fully grown – and can be easily transported. The lake is closed to boating, fishing and other uses because of the danger of spreading the destructive snails to other waters.

The lake level will remain unchanged during the inspection. The Capitol Lake dam was last inspected in 2007.
