Injury prompts reminder about campus parking garage safety

In September, a state employee was struck by a vehicle in the Plaza Garage.

The injured person said he had just parked his car at the start of a work day and was starting to walk towards a garage exit when another state employee, who was "wearing sunglasses, going too fast and driving in the opposite lane," hit him.

In light of this recent incident, the Enterprise Services parking office wants to remind state employees about a few basic safety tips to follow when parking and walking in Capitol Campus parking lots and garages.

Drivers:

  • Slow Down! The speed limit in Capitol Campus parking garages is 12 mph.
  • It can be especially difficult to see pedestrians in a parking garage, so use extra caution.
  • Turn your vehicle lights on.
  • Obey all stop signs and crosswalks.
  • Don't engage in distracting behaviors while the car is still moving.
  • Make sure that someone picking you up or dropping you off does not block a building entrance or exit.

Pedestrians:

  • Treat a parking lot like a street. Look both ways before crossing.
  • Use crosswalks and designated walkways.
  • Don't talk on the phone, text or use headphones until you're out of the parking lot.
  • Don't assume drivers can see you.

Other reminders

  • Please remember that the garage is considered a state building and smoking is not permitted.
  • Do not put out cigarettes or dump garbage on the garage floor. Garbage receptacles are available throughout the garage.
  • WSP will be increasing garage patrols to ensure speed compliance.
