Plaza Garage repair project completion delayed by one week

The opening of stair tower 1 in the Plaza Garage – the underground parking garage on the east Capitol Campus – will be delayed by a week. Stair towers 1 and 8 have been undergoing repairs.

Stair tower 8, the one nearest to the Employment Security Building, reopened earlier this week for use on all levels.

Stair tower 1, which is a few yards to the east and closer to the Transportation Building, is expected to reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 15, rather than Sept. 8 as previously anticipated.

As the construction project nears completion, both stair towers will experience intermittent temporary closures through the month of October.

For many years, rain has infiltrated the Plaza Garage corroding essential components and weakening the structure. The project entailed the repair of steel beams and concrete panels at the southwest garage entrance off of Capitol Way and the reconstruction of stair towers 1 and 8, the ones nearest to Maple Park Avenue.

The project was scheduled to be completed at the end of June, but was delayed due to unforeseen construction issues.
