Construction work to close campus road April 19-20

A short section of 11th Avenue – from Capitol Way to Water Street – on the west Capitol Campus will be closed from about 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19 for a major concrete pour at the 1063 Block Replacement Project construction site.

The work is weather dependent: The concrete cannot be poured if it is raining heavily.

The goal is to complete the work on April 19, with April 20 serving as backup day in case of bad weather.

Two large concrete pump trucks with remote-controlled articulating robotic arms will be on site on April 19 with one of them parked on 11th Avenue near the intersection with Capitol Way.

Barricades will be placed at both ends of the road closure and flaggers will be on site to help manage traffic.

The work will bring heavy truck traffic to the area around the construction site and nearby city streets, with concrete deliveries arriving every five to six minutes throughout most of the day. Once on site, the concrete trucks will line up along 11th Avenue and backup to the pumpers. After the concrete is unloaded, the trucks will exit the area by driving around the west side of the GA Building and then head east on Union Avenue towards the interstate.

The work will require the closure of the left-hand turn lane on northbound Capitol Way at the intersection with 11th Avenue and the sidewalk crossing at 11th Avenue and Columbia Street, near the GA Building.

The closure of 11th Avenue will require a temporary change to the route used by the Dash shuttle, the free bus that runs through the heart of downtown Olympia from the Capitol Campus to the Olympia Farmers Market. Go to the Intercity Transit webpage for more information.

The concrete being poured on April 19 will be for the first floor of the new building. This work represents a project milestone as the construction work transitions from mostly underground to almost exclusively above ground. When it is complete, the new building will be five-stories tall.

Other upcoming work

Comcast is scheduled to move a fiber optic line from a pole located on the northwest corner of the 1063 Project construction site to another nearby location, causing a temporary interruption to cellphone, Internet and television service to customers who live near the west Capitol Campus. The work is scheduled to be done during the night - from 1 to 5 a.m. – on May 4.

The work will mostly be confined to an area near the intersection of Columbia Street and Union Avenue but will extend a block north along Columbia to 10th Avenue. It will require the use of a utility bucket truck with attached work lights.

Watch the project

A camera mounted on the roof of the General Administration Building is pointed at the work site allowing viewers to watch the progress of the construction on the project website. The camera image is refreshed every 15 minutes.
